The State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board seeks applicants for an Operations Coordinator – Program Coordinator III to perform the following duties:
The Operations Coordinator is responsible for coordination and assists in the oversight on behalf of the State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board (SRB) as it relates to mosquito control in Massachusetts and its 11 regional mosquito control programs and Districts/Projects (Districts)204 member cities and towns. The SRB sits within the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR).
The scope of the position includes a wide range of responsibilities and roles to ensure the proper functioning of the SRB and coordination of the regional mosquito control Districts and programs. This position works to ensure regular, ongoing communications and response to inquiries to and from regional mosquito control Districts, cities and towns and other stakeholders. Assistant/Associate Professor of Public Health Entomology

This position is part of our arbovirology laboratory team. Duties of the position include accessioning specimens; processing specimens; performing serological assays for the detection of antibody to arboviruses such as West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus, eastern equine encephalitis virus, Zika virus, and dengue virus; reporting results; and general laboratory duties. Applicants with laboratory experience and licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the State of Florida as a clinical or public health laboratory technician in microbiology are preferred.

Public Health Entomologist
Location: Wake County, NC
Description:
This position administers statewide program of vector borne disease prevention targeting arthropods that transmit disease agents to humans (e.g., develops epidemiologic, field and laboratory capabilities for investigation, surveillance and control of vector borne diseases to include mosquito and tick borne diseases). Maintain readiness to respond to emergencies caused by epidemics, disaster-related vector problems, develops recommendations for program goals and objectives, program implementation and evaluation related to vector borne diseases. Instructs and trains other personnel as necessary on procedures for field, laboratory and epidemiologic investigations, prepares budgets and allocates resources for purchase, plans and carries out public health educational program related to vector borne diseases to include prevention and control. Plans and conducts training seminars for public health officials, medical professionals, academic students and general public, participates in internal and external committees related to vector-borne disease issues to include emerging infectious diseases and supervises assigned staff. In collaboration with professional associations and local vector control programs, develops integrated vector control strategy with proportional emphasis on integrated pest management.

CDC Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Entomological Surveillance

The participant will be involved in projects to learn about the development and improvement of molecular tools that inform decisions regarding vector mosquito control and surveillance. They will be trained in laboratory workflow development, specimen processing and management, next-generation sequencing, PCR assay development, and data analysis with a variety of tools (command line using CDC’s cluster computing resources, programs such as Geneious and CLC Genomics, and the online bioinformatics platform Galaxy). The fellow will have the opportunity to develop their own related side project if desired.

Debug Biological Research Associate

Our team is hiring a biological research associate to oversee rearing and quality in our South Florida mosquito production facility.
Mosquitoes kill more people than every other animal combined. One particular species transmits diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya that sicken hundreds of millions of people every year. Applying broad spectrum pesticides is unsustainable as they become less effective over time and can be toxic. Clearing standing water is not enough since it is challenging to find all of the places where mosquitoes breed. Debug is an effort to eliminate mosquito-borne disease using the Incompatible Insect Technique IIT. We combine modern molecular biology with robotic automation and machine learning to generate millions of sterile male mosquitoes that, when safely released into the wild to mate with females, cause a crash in the population of only the one targeted species. In concert with integrated mosquito vector control programs, Debug aims to ultimately impact the cycle of mosquito-borne disease
Responsibilities:
-Meticulously rear multiple mosquito strains within a QMS setting.
-Performing quality-control bioassays including testing for cytoplasmic
incompatibility, pupation rate, longevity, viability, etc for the various strains being
maintained and produced.
-Work cross-functionally with engineering to troubleshoot rearing issues that arise
during day-to-day operations.
-Train and oversee new staff on mosquito rearing procedures.
-Perform research experiments aimed at increasing mosquito rearing efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in a biological discipline or equivalent practical experience.
-Experience with insect husbandry.
-Strong attention to detail and meticulous note taking ability.
-Ability to escalate and clearly communicate rearing or other issues as they arise.
Preferred Qualification:
-Fluent in spoken Spanish
-Previous experience rearing mosquitoes

Internship Opportunity
Lee County, Florida
AMCA’s model deposition project
This opportunity is to assist with the AMCA modeling project, the PI of this project is Dr. Jane Bonds. The goal of the project is to better assess where ULV spray clouds drift and how much deposition occurs during an application event. Work will be done in Lee County, and the intern will help with the field work.
The team generally starts at 4 in the morning, sets up sampling stations in the field, sprays at 6am, then picks up sampling stations at 7, and are generally back by 9am. Following this you will assist with set up for next day events, with “end of day” being around noon, although with field trials something always comes up. The next trials are scheduled to be performed in Mid-August and again in Mid-September. Housing in Lee County could be available.
